Passing the Koʻi: ʻOhana Waʻa Welcomes New Alakaʻi

ree

ʻOhana Waʻa's annual board meeting on January 25, 2025, marked a significant moment of leadership transition—reflecting the organization’s deep commitment to growth and its enduring legacy of unity. Members from across the pae ʻāina gathered to honor outgoing leaders Dennis Chun and Kauʻi Fu of Kauaʻi, who have played a vital role in steering ʻOhana Waʻa’s mission forward through years of dedicated service.

The highlight of the gathering was the passing of the koʻi—a ceremonial gesture symbolizing the transfer of kuleana, leadership, and continuity, in which Dennis and Kauʻi handed the koʻi to new alakaʻi Penny Martin of Molokaʻi and Paʻanaakalā Tanaka of Maui—both deeply respected and trusted leaders within the voyaging community.

Hoʻomaikaʻi to Penny and Paʻanaakalā as they take the helm on this next leg of ʻOhana Waʻa’s voyage. May your leadership be guided by the stars, grounded in aloha, and strengthened by the collective waʻa ʻohana you now carry forward.
