Crew Training
ʻOhana Waʻa is committed to growing a strong multigenerational network of voyagers and wayfinders through the ʻImi Naʻauao Crew Training Program. Held nearly annually since 2007, this multi-day training unites novice and experienced crew members from Hawaiʻi and beyond to instill the cultural practices, ancestral knowledge, and skills of long-distance voyaging, as practiced by our seafaring ancestors and now revitalized in contemporary society throughout Oceania.
Over the years, the ʻImi Naʻauao Crew Training has been hosted by voyaging communities in Hilo, Waimea, Mahukona, Kawaihae, Oʻahu, and Kauaʻi, each offering a unique approach to developing crew capacity and community engagement. Immersing participants in diverse practices enhances their experience, deepens relationships, strengthens collective efforts, and expands skill sets and perspective. This training builds a network of canoe relationships throughout Hawaiʻi, ensuring the continuity and revitalization of our voyaging traditions.
