We are humbled and honored to announce that ʻOhana Waʻa has been selected as one of 17 Native Hawaiian Organizations to receive funding through the 2024 Kapapahuliau Climate Resilience Program. This award will support our project, ʻImi Aku, ʻImi Iho, which focuses on empowering voyaging partners on Maui, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, and Kauaʻi to recognize and respond to the immediate and escalating effects of climate change.
By expanding our ʻImi Naʻauao Crew Training programmatic framework, we aim to enhance our understanding of climate impacts through careful observation, data collection, and analysis. Over the next five years, we will establish strong partnerships from mauka to makai, collaborating with The MEGA Lab to train voyagers in mapping and developing 3D reef models. Experts in forestry and waʻa provisioning will also teach our crew how to sustain and nourish healthy ecosystems from ʻāina to waʻa. Additionally, Hao Media will help create a hub for the data collected during each ʻImi Naʻauao, contributing to ʻOhana Waʻa's goal of improving long-term understanding of nearshore resource resilience to climate change. By sharing lessons learned and drawing from the wisdom of our kūpuna and practitioners, we strive to strengthen cultural and climate resilience for ourselves and future generations.
